Studio Time since February Seminar
Playing with the idea of obscuring. White polyester cloth placed over an existing painting as an act of obscuring what (female) painting/art has gone before. Beneath the fabric can be seen the grid markings that form the basis of my current body of work. Loose threads drawn onto the fabric with paint, pastel and graphite. Considering investigating whether i can embroider text onto the fabric along the bottom edge. In discussion with a company and discussing weight of fabric to avoid puckering and largest area available.
Investigating the idea of repair, as part of the feminine line. Louise Bourgeois's quote: the magic power of the needle, where a needle is used to repair damage. “It’s a claim to forgiveness. It is never aggressive; It’s not a pin.” After the unravelling, is there opportunity to rework the pattern? To repair, to renew, to redefine?
Playing with stitching and a punch needle to create abstract and decorative embroidery on fabric and directly onto canvas. I like the idea of punching thread into the canvas in reaction to the feminine ideal of how to embroider. This idea was trialed at the February seminar with some stitches and needlework onto two canvases. I have further worked on the pieces to explore the interaction of paint and thread. I like the juxtaposition of embroidery and abstract expressive gestural marks.
