Studio progress - July to September seminar, 2024
So after the July assessment, I read over the assessor’s notes and recommended reading. My making shifted slightly towards working through the ideas of unravelling, engaged by the story of Penelope weaving by day and then undoing by night. I read the passages in Homer’s The Odyssey that related this story and reminded myself of the epic voyage home undertaken by Odysseus. But I was more interested in Penelope and her feminist act of undoing the shroud in order to fend off suitors.I looked further into Judy Millar’s work and her process of layering and making and unmaking. I read Rosalind Krauss’s essay Grid which led me to research the significance of Mondrian’s grid, and Modernism. This research is ongoing.
